On an early March day, as we stepped out of the San Juan airport, the warm, vibrant air immediately embraced us. We felt a sense of welcome, and San Juan seemed refreshingly different from cities in the continental U.S.
Although San Juan is an American city—it’s part of an unincorporated territory of the United States—it feels more like a Caribbean city due to its rich Hispanic heritage reflected in its music, food, and festivals. With a population of around 2.2 million people, San Juan was founded in 1521 by Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León. It is the most populous city in Puerto Rico and the second-oldest city established by European colonists in the Americas.
We stayed in the central business district, very close to Old San Juan, the city’s historic district. Old San Juan, or Old Town, is located on a small island connected to the mainland by three bridges. It is the oldest settlement within Puerto Rico and is renowned for its colorful colonial-era buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, and charming plazas, all preserved for over 500 years.
One of the most iconic landmarks in Old San Juan is Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a 16th-century fortress that guards the entrance to San Juan Bay. Along with nearby Castillo San Cristobal, it was built by the Spanish to defend the city from foreign invaders and is now a popular tourist attraction.
The neighborhood is also home to several museums, including the Museum of the Americas, which showcases the art and culture of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, and the Puerto Rico Museum of Art, which houses an extensive collection of Puerto Rican and Latin American art.
Old San Juan is known for its vibrant culinary scene, with numerous restaurants serving traditional Puerto Rican dishes such as mofongo, arroz con gandules, and lechón. The area also boasts lively bars and nightclubs, making it a popular destination for nightlife in San Juan.
Overall, Old San Juan is a must-visit for anyone interested in Puerto Rican culture and history. Its lively atmosphere, stunning architecture, and rich cultural heritage make it a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal
Castillo San Felipe del Morro, also known as El Morro, is a 16th-century fortress built by the Spanish. Designed with thick walls, bastions, and towers, it was constructed to defend against attacks from European powers like the British and Dutch, notorious for their piracy and privateering in the Caribbean. Over the centuries, the fortress has been modified and was damaged during the Spanish-American War. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist attraction, renowned for its breathtaking views and the daily tradition of cannon firing.
At the opposite end of Old San Juan lies Castillo San Cristóbal, another historic fortress connected to El Morro. Built by the Spanish between 1765 and 1783 and named after King Charles III of Spain, it was designed to complement El Morro, creating a unified defensive system for San Juan Bay.
Castillo San Cristóbal is one of the largest forts constructed by the Spanish in the Americas, spanning 27 acres. It boasts a complex network of tunnels, ramps, and walls, including the famous Garita del Diablo (Devil’s Sentry Box), a watchtower offering panoramic views of the city and the sea. With its strategic location and impressive architecture, the fort has become a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world to explore its rooms, dungeons, and battlements.
Beyond its military significance, Castillo San Cristóbal has played an important role in Puerto Rico’s cultural heritage. In the 20th century, it was used as a prison for political dissidents, and today it symbolizes Puerto Rican resilience and resistance. The fort is designated as both a National Historic Site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Harbor sunset
As the sun begins to set over the harbor near Castillo San Cristóbal in San Juan, the sky comes alive with a stunning palette of colors. The warm, golden light of the setting sun slowly gives way to deep shades of orange, pink, and red, casting a soft glow over the water and the landscape.
Boats pass through the harbor, bathed in the sun’s golden rays, as if they are carrying the sunlight away with them, drifting slowly across the water. Time itself seems touched by gold, reflected in the shimmering surface of the sea.
As the light fades, the sky takes on a moody, atmospheric quality. Shadows from the fort and the boats stretch out across the water, while the air cools and the gentle sound of lapping waves provides a peaceful backdrop to the breathtaking view.
When the sun finally dips below the horizon, the sky bursts into one last vivid display of color before fading into darkness. The twinkling lights of the city begin to glow, creating a magical scene around the tranquil harbor.

The Museum of Art of San Juan
The Museum of Art of San Juan, also known as the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, is a world-class institution located in the Santurce neighborhood of San Juan. The museum is housed in a beautiful neoclassical building, originally constructed as the San Juan Municipal Hospital in the 1920s.
The museum’s collection features over 1,000 works of art from Puerto Rico, Latin America, and the Caribbean, including paintings, sculptures, prints, and photographs. The permanent collection showcases pieces by renowned Puerto Rican artists such as José Campeche, Francisco Oller, and Lorenzo Homar, alongside works by international figures like Diego Rivera, Pablo Picasso, and Joan Miró.
In addition to its permanent collection, the Museum of Art of San Juan hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions throughout the year, highlighting the work of both established and emerging artists from Puerto Rico and beyond. We were fortunate that a modern art exhibition was open to the public during our visit, and I managed to capture a few photos of the paintings—mainly modern art—that truly resonated with me.

This stunning tropical rainforest spans over 28,000 acres and is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including over 240 species of trees, hundreds of bird species, and numerous reptiles and amphibians.
Rio La Planta, also known as Rio Tanama, is a beautiful river located in Arecibo. The river gets its name from a hydroelectric power plant built in 1923, which once supplied electricity to nearby towns. We spent a day along the river and visited two impressive waterfalls. Parking was limited, but we were lucky to find a spot and only paid a small fee. We truly enjoyed this beautiful river and its waterfalls.
