New England farms have a rich history. Before European settlers arrived in the region, Native Americans had already developed a sophisticated agricultural system. Farming in New England has traditionally been challenging due to poor soil and rocky terrain. As a result, corn has been a major crop, but today, farms in the region produce a wide variety of goods, including milk, meat, berries, and vegetables—accounting for 50 percent of the dairy products and 40 percent of the vegetables consumed in the area.

Currently, there are approximately 33,000 farms across New England, with about 7,200 located in Massachusetts alone. Driving along Highway 84 and routes 22, 41, and 46, one can easily spot various farms scattered across the hills and slopes, but rarely on flat land. The scenery surrounding these farms is beautiful, regardless of the season—be it spring, summer, fall, or winter. Interestingly, while you may not often see farmers working the land, you can always spot horses, cattle, chickens, and perhaps even sheep.
