Giraffes in Kenya are often called gentle giants, and they hold the title of the tallest terrestrial mammals in Africa. Known for their long necks, they tower over the savannah grasslands, forming a distinctive part of Kenya’s landscape. The country is home to three species: the Masai giraffe, Rothschild’s giraffe, and the reticulated giraffe.

The Masai giraffe, distinguished by its jagged and irregular spot patterns, is one of the most commonly seen species in Kenya. These majestic creatures are frequently spotted browsing on acacia trees and shrubs in national parks and reserves like Maasai Mara, Amboseli, and Tsavo.

Rothschild’s giraffe, one of the most endangered giraffe subspecies, also resides in Kenya. Thanks to ongoing conservation efforts, their numbers are slowly increasing, and they can be observed in protected areas like the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi.

The reticulated giraffe, with its striking, geometric spot patterns, adds to the rich diversity of giraffes in Kenya and is commonly seen in the wild.

Spotting and identifying these different giraffe species is one of the simple joys of visiting Kenya’s national parks and conservancies.
