Birding is one of my favorite activities during the spring and early summer. New York City offers a variety of birding spots, each home to unique species. Here are some of the places I frequent visit and the birds I’ve observed there.
The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is located in the southern parts of both Brooklyn and Queens, near John F. Kennedy International Airport. It encompasses over 12,600 acres of water, salt marshes, freshwater and man-made brackish ponds, upland fields, and woodlands, including several islands in Jamaica Bay.
As one of the largest bird habitats in the northeastern United States, it is the best place in New York City to observe over 300 migrating bird species. Each season brings different bird species to the sanctuary, making it a year-round destination for birdwatching (click the link for details). Here, visitors may spot snow geese, brants, various species of ducks, raptors such as Cooper’s hawks and peregrine falcons, as well as barn owls, great horned owls, and bald eagles.
This refuge is my favorite birding spot because it is relatively far from the city center, resulting in fewer visitors, even on weekends. You can spend an entire day there in peace, simply enjoying the experience of birdwatching.

Kisco, New York)
The Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch is situated on the 350-acre Arthur W. Butler Memorial Sanctuary in Bedford Corners, New York. The watch station features an open deck on the ridge, facing east, with the I-95 highway running below.
Both the Hawkwatch and the Sanctuary are part of the Taconic Mountains, which create a unique geographic structure. The distinctive sounds in this area form an invisible barrier, directing migrating raptors into an inland bottleneck that passes directly over the Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch. These raptors migrate from their northern breeding grounds in Quebec, Canada, and northern New England to their wintering grounds in the southern United States, as well as Central and South America.
Depending on the season, the watch station is an excellent spot to observe the spectacular migration of broad-winged hawks in mid- to late September, red-shouldered hawks in late October and early November, and golden eagles and goshawks from late October onward.

#3: Edith G. Read Natural Park and Wildlife Sanctuary
The park and sanctuary is named after an American environmentalist who played a significant role in preserving open spaces and protecting watercourses and wetlands in Westchester County. It is located along the shores of Long Island Sound. The central habitat features the 85-acre Playland Lake, a brackish body of water with a mix of salt and fresh water situated within Rye Playland amusement park. This lake hosts thousands of migratory and wintering birds in mixed-species flocks, including waterfowl such as greater scaup, white-winged scoters, surf scoters, and northern gannets.
The site also serves as a foraging area for numerous wading birds, including great blue herons, great egrets, snowy egrets, and black-crowned night-herons. According to the Audubon Society of New York, various other migratory birds have been observed in the area, such as common loons (six in December 1994), pied-billed grebes (two in November 1996), northern harriers (one in May 1995), red-shouldered hawks (one in November 1994), and American woodcocks (at least three pairs). Additionally, common terns (12 in July 1995), black terns (three in May 1995), black skimmers (two in June 1995), willow flycatchers (breeding), and yellow-breasted chats (breeding; one in December 1995) have also been recorded.
The sanctuary has been recognized by the National Audubon Society of New York as an Important Bird Area, owing to its wide variety of bird species and its significance as a migratory flyway.
Birding here is one of my greatest pleasures during my leisure time. The park is conveniently located near my home, and most importantly, I get to enjoy birdwatching in the beautiful green landscapes and along the stunning shores of Long Island!
