The town I’m introducing in this post is one of the ten thousands of small towns in southeastern China. Unlike well-known towns like Zhouzhuang or Wuzhen, this town offers a more authentic glimpse into the everyday life of countryside in southeastern China. With a long history, its ancient wooden houses, though weathered and worn, still stand as a testament to its past.

Economic progress has brought prosperity and modern life to this town, as it has across China, but the locals strive diligently to preserve their traditional lifestyle, culture, and heritage. Here, you can witness the constant interplay between tradition and modernization—in the people, along the streets, and within the narrow lanes.

Visiting small towns like this offers a genuine way to experience the lives of ordinary Chinese people and to understand how they feel about the changes shaping their world..
