Hippos (Hippopotamus amphibius) are semi-aquatic herbivores commonly found in rivers, lakes, and wetland areas across Kenya . They are known for their large size, barrel-shaped bodies, and massive mouths. Hippos spend much of their day submerged in water to stay cool and come ashore at night to graze on grasses. They are found in various Kenyan wildlife reserves and water bodies, such as Lake Naivasha and the Mara River.
At Porini Lion Camp in Olare Motorogi Conservancy, we often heard the noise of hippos grazing in the small pond near our tent at night.
