Osprey pairs return to their nests at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in early spring to hatch their young in the same locations each year. These ospreys have chosen artificial nesting platforms installed by the Refuge, situated on the beach’s west side, far from human activity. This provides a safe environment for nesting. This year, the pair successfully hatched two chicks, with the female keeping watch for threats while the male hunted for food. Despite the cloudy weather and reduced visibility, the spirit of life was vivid in the sky.
Ospreys at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge are migratory. During the breeding season starting in April, they travel from various regions along the Atlantic Coast of North America and from the Gulf of Mexico all the way to the Maritime provinces of Canada to establish their nests. Remarkably, some even fly over the sea from Colombia to nest here.
Osprey pairs are generally monogamous and often mate for life. The male typically selects a nesting site in a dead tree, on a cliff, or on a man-made structure near water. Both partners collect sticks and other materials for the nest, although the female usually arranges it, creating a large and bulky structure. Osprey couples have defined roles and responsibilities but also collaborate in raising the next generation. In this regard, they may be doing better than some humans.
